Eden Prairie has long been dedicated to environmental stewardship, implementing various initiatives to preserve our community’s natural beauty and resources. This commitment is evident in the city’s comprehensive approach to sustainability, encompassing energy conservation, waste reduction, water management, and landscape preservation.
Climate Action Plan
In March 2020, the Eden Prairie City Council approved a Climate Action Plan with the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This plan outlines strategies to reduce carbon pollution through measures such as promoting renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency in buildings, and encouraging sustainable transportation options. The success of this plan relies on strong partnerships with residents, businesses, and various organizations.
Sustainable Eden Prairie Program
Building upon previous environmental efforts, the city launched the Sustainable Eden Prairie program. This ongoing initiative focuses on educating the community and implementing sustainable practices in four key areas: energy, landscape, waste, and water. By leading by example, the city aims to provide a foundation for residents and businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices.
Community Recognition
The collective efforts of the community have not gone unnoticed. In 2024, Eden Prairie Schools received the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon recognition for their leadership in reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability education. This accolade highlights the importance of community involvement in achieving environmental goals.
